In Trinidad and Tobago, carnival celebrations begin after Christmas and peak during the Monday and Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday. Costumed masqueraders and festival revelers partake in the two-day street parade, generally accompanied by soca, calypso, and steel pan music, before beginning the Lenten season. The National Museum and Art Gallery hosts a permanent ongoing exhibit of masks and costumes from past carnivals. The carnival costume, pictured in the center, is made with long and short white feathers and features highlights of black feathers. Gold ornaments decorate the costume which also has a ram’s head near the waist area. Steel pan music, which evolved from African drum music, originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 20th century and is often a featured instrument during Carnival. As one of the national emblems of Trinidad and Tobago, steel pans were traditionally made from used steel oil drums or steel containers. The container’s head is concave and the playing surface is divided into convex sections by slants to make the pan's range of sounds. In this image are used steel oil drums, some steel pans with the Shell Oil Company logo and the word "Invaders," painted white metal steel pan stands, and breadfruit trees. One poster is advertising the Shell Invaders Steel Orchestra. Other signs includes phrases such as: "We are the greatest" and "Notice there is to be no unnecessary coasting in the yard." In the background is a woman standing on top of a concrete building's roof with laudry and men standing near the wall. Slide labeled Trin. 16.

Jonkonnu is an Afro-Bahamian carnival-like festival held every Boxing Day, New Year's Day and summer time. Groups dance down streets and dress in paper-fringed costumes. The musicians often use traditional instruments such as goat skin drums and cowbells.

The seasonal patterns of conceptions and births differ between geographic areas. Several potential determinants of this variation have been identified, including biological, environmental and behavioral elements, but festive events are rarely mentioned. We investigated the possible association between the carnival and seasonal fertility variations in the French West Indies. We ran a retrospective registry-based study. The data were extracted from the registry of all births on Guadeloupe between 2000 and 2011 (n = 74,412), and from the Maternity Birth Register of the University Hospital, for all pregnancies of at least 14 completed weeks of gestation (observable conceptions) with an outcome recorded between 2007 and 2010 (n = 8,425). We compared data during and outside the carnival period for each year, including 2009, when there was no carnival due to a 44-day general strike. In all years other than 2009, the weekly number of births was higher for pregnancies initiated during the carnival period than for pregnancies initiated at other times, and the weekly number of observable conceptions was higher during the carnival period than at other times. Our findings support the hypothesis that carnivals in the French West Indies are associated with an increase in the number of conceptions and subsequent births.
